THE NAMES OF THESE COUPLES HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO RESPECT THEIR PRIVACY

ANGELA BARRETT AND KYLE JONES

ANGELA CAME FROM AN AFFLUENT FAMILY FROM THE NORTHEAST AND WAS ACCUSTOMED TO ELABORATE AND IMPRESSIVE EVENTS. HER FIANCÉ, KYLE, WAS FROM A SMALL TOWN IN RURAL VIRGINIA WHERE BOTH THE WEDDING AND THE RECEPTION TOOK PLACE IN THE CHURCH, WITH BASIC REFRESHMENTS.

“SPECIAL ISSUES”
ANGELA’S CONSIDERATE NATURE MADE IT EASY FOR HER TO SEE THE HUGE VARIABLE BETWEEN WHAT SHE REALLY WANTED AND WHAT MIGHT APPEAR “OVER THE TOP” TO KYLE’S FAMILY. HOW COULD SHE HAVE WHAT SHE REALLY WANTED WHILE PLEASING HER IN-LAWS?

“OUR SOLUTION”
THE SOLUTION TO THIS SENSITIVE ISSUE COMES FROM UNDERSTANDING QUALITY AND TRUE INTIMACY. WE NEEDED TO KNOW WHAT TRADITIONS KYLE’S FAMILY HONORED IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THEIR EXPECTATIONS AND FORM A COLLABORATIVE PLAN. WHAT WAS IMPORTANT TO KYLE’S PARENTS TURNED OUT TO BE A MATTER OF INCLUDING LAYERS OF FRIENDS AND EXTENDED FAMILY THAT MIGHT NORMALLY BE EXCLUDED FROM A FORMAL AFFAIR. SO FIRST WE MODIFIED THE SERVICE FROM A FORMAL SEATED BUFFET TO A “STATIONS MENU.” THIS ALLOWED EVERYONE TO BE SEATED AT SOME POINT, BUT ENCOURAGED MUCH MORE MOMENTUM, TABLE HOPPING AND VISITING. WE ALSO RELAXED THE TIMETABLE A LITTLE SO THAT NOTHING FELT RUSHED. ADDITIONALLY, BY HAVING MULTIPLE STATIONS FEATURING DIFFERENT CUISINE, THE GUESTS GOT A SENSE OF A VARIETY OF OPTIONS IN CHOOSING THEIR MEAL! ANGELA CHOSE ONE STATION TO BE A “LOW COUNTRY” PICNIC, FEATURING HER IN-LAW’S FAVORITE FOODS, WHILE CHOOSING THE PRIMARY BUFFET TO BE A MORE DELUXE CONTINENTAL OFFERING TO COMPLIMENT HER TASTE.

EVERYONE WAS COMFORTABLE, GENUINELY IMPRESSED, AND VERY WELL FED. THIS CONTRIBUTED TO AN OVERALL SENSE OF PERSONAL CONNECTION, GENUINE INTIMACY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, FUN FOR EVERYONE! IT TAKES A LITTLE LONGER TO COME UP WITH THE PERFECT SOLUTION, BUT YOU CAN BE SURE THAT LEVEL OF COMFORT NEVER COMES BY CHOOSING ONE FROM “COLUMN A” AND TWO FROM “COLUMN B.”

BECAUSE THERE WAS SO MUCH VARIETY IN THE REVISED MENU, WE COULD SCALE BACK ON THE NUMBER OF PASSED HORS D’OEUVRES. IN A FORMAL BUFFET, THE HORS D’OEUVRES ARE INCREASED TO ADJUST FOR THE LIMITED VARIETY OF FOOD IN THE MAIN COURSE. THE GUESTS ENJOYED OUR SCRUMPTIOUS SHRIMP AND MASCARPONE CHEESE GRITS SO MUCH WE AGREED TO HAND OUT THE RECIPE!

A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF THE FOOD PRICING: ORIGINALLY, ANGELA SELECTED TO HAVE A FORMAL SEATED BUFFET, CONSISTING OF A “KNIFE AND FORK” MENU. IT IS DESIGNED FOR EVERYONE TO EAT AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME, SO MAINTENANCE LABOR TO THE DINING ROOM DOUBLES EVEN THOUGH YOU ONLY MAY NEED THEM FOR 30 MINUTES. TABLES ARE SET WITH FULL PLACE SETTINGS AND WATER GLASSES: MORE LABOR—AND MORE FORMALITY, WHICH IN THIS CASE WAS A WASTE! BY REDUCING LABOR AND INCREASING FOOD, ANGELA SAVED MONEY OVERALL, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, WAS ABLE TO ENRICH THE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL HER GUESTS.

*NOTICE THE VARIABLE IN THE WAY WE MARGINALIZED ALCOHOL FOR THE REVISION AND WAVED ALMOST $15.00 PER PERSON WITH TAX AND GRATUITY. WE SUBSTITUTED WINE AND BEER FOR THE PREMIUM OPEN BAR, BUT WE EXPANDED THE SIGNATURE COCKTAIL TO INCLUDE TWO MIXED DRINKS AND WE ADDED FIREFLY “SWEET TEA”, VODKA TO THE WINE BAR BECAUSE IT FELT “REGIONAL.” HER GRANDFATHER HAD TO HAVE DEWARS, SO HER DAD BROUGHT US A BOTTLE TO HAVE FOR HIM AT THE BAR. NO REASON TO HAVE A FULL BAR TO ACCOMMODATE ONE PERSON! ANOTHER PROBLEM SOLVED!
